Back to the Future

May 2009, London: The familiar but slightly jubilant voice of Martin Tyler betrays his years in the commentary box. He is witnessing history. His calm meassured tone has been replaced by a quivering emotional rasp.

"The wait is over . . . 19 long & painful years. The red half of Merseyside has long dreamed of this moment . . . The moment they get their hands on that elusive Premier League trophy," quivers Tyler.

"The Spurs players have lined up a guard of honour for the champions of England & no one will say Liverpool Football Club & their fans don't deserve this."

"All the pain, hurt & disappointment has been erased by their great visionary of a manager, Rafa Benitez. . ."

"And now the moment we've all been waiting for, as Liverpool's star player of the season, the mercurial Lucas Leiva, is handed the premier league trophy."

Andy Gray his excitable co-commentator is less than pleased given his Goodison roots but concurs.
"Yes, Martin. The Brazilian international has been unbelievable. His performances throughout the season has been spectacular. The games against Stoke & Everton were great examples. Rafa's decisions has been vindicated with Liverpool finally ending their long wait fer no19," Gray says in his instantly recognisable gruff Scottish brogue.

As the players led by Lucas do a lap of honour around White Hart Lane, Tyler asks the million dollar question. "When did you think was Liverpool's turning point in the season, Andy?"

"Well, Martin, I can pinpoint two distinct moments. First, when Rafa's well-timed attack on Fergie led to united crumbling away under the pressure & secondly, when, Liverpool held on to win that precious three points in the Merseyside derby at Anfield . . ."

Everton stopped Liverpool in their tracks at Anfield with a 1-1 draw thanks to a late Tim Cahill equaliser that prevented their bitter rivals reclaiming the Premier League leadership.-soccernet.

maybe the turning point is at old trafford...or maybe not 19 but 20yrs.
maybe.

I'm not gonna put too expectation into winning this year. Save myself from all the frustration over all the silly points dropped and gutless performances. Draws ain't gonna do our title chances any good.

We run the risk of self imploding with all the dramas off the field. Since everybody is not doing as well as they ought too, it's gonna be a season to see who sucks less.

Very funny.....

Still , it aint over till the fat lady sings. King Maker? Old traffod this coming March.
I will only throw in the towel depending on that results.

Gooooo Baggies!!!!!

Despite drawing FIVE of their 11 home games, Rafael Benitez is still convinced the Premier League crown is going to Merseyside.

Benitez said: “I am confident — I still believe we can win the title. You have to think about the positives. In August, did we want to be in the position we are now?

“I can guarantee you that 100 per cent of our supporters would have said ‘yes’ — and I also know that we can play better. We have a lot of players coming back from injuries.

“It’s too soon to say but we are level on points with United in January, still in the FA Cup and Champions League — so we are in a good position.”

---this is it, the challenge that Rafa thew down when he was with Valencia saying that he will win us the coveted No. 19. So for those naysayers and saynayers!...keep the faith!

Jonno said...

What you've been smoking AD? Can I have some? While winning it would be great, many would be happy to see our challenge would carry on till the business end of the season, the last 8 games!
It's still too early to say for me, yes, they'll have that game in hand, but I reckon many of them would still drop points. That's for sure, like JonC said, it's down to who sucks less...

Balaji:- me realy understands ur pain bro..actually when i searched for the result i was praying that liverpool would have won and all...yet things became the opposite..
Its gonna be a really tight race bro...
Nice post by the way...

Haha nice one. "The mercurial Lucas Leiva" indeed haha. Expected the result but me current semangat's been a little lemah and honestly couldn't have foreseen a red victory really. A spirited Toffees performance and why not, a draw's better than a loss. Sad to say.

LFC have lost only one so far but drawn like 326, fooked just as well. Our beloved LFC's script we all come to know so well don't we. Having said that, there's something special in this just yet, (me prays) - a good ol fashioned LFC comeback.

Thankful all the same they're still in it with a fighting chance though. Wouldn't have thought this at the start of the season. This eventful season so far has given the red hearts renewed hope along with the inevitable angst.

Hoping fer LFC to start winning again and keep it tight towards no. 19. Anyways, come mid March, reacting in true Mighty Mouse style, "would luv it if we beat them... luv it!"

United on top for now and deservedly so.

(if they get any at all after this season that is..)..whilst bein' totally ignorant of the fact that the cocka-cola league/football league beckons them next season...and oblivious to the fact that THE LANE has not been privy to company as such in decades..."

sigh. i might as well go around hunting for a jersey of shrewsbury town fc and wear it; that way
i can live unnoticed
without a major part of ma life's
regrets:)

nish one. tugged me strings i'll tell ya that.

appreciatively,

Bala, you left out the part where Jermain Pennant stays and flourishes to be player of the year!

hehehe...but hey, cheer up man. in derby matches, you dont need no gambling god to predict the outcome. the weaker neighbour (read; EVE & TOT-sorry again mozz!) tend to up the ante and create an upset. its not much about the winning but the rights to brag till at least a week. come the next game their form will return to square one- ORDINARY!

Akuani, you should know better la, me is being fooking sarcastic la.

Les: In fact, this is me most pessimistic post yet. Ain't gonna happen. Geddit?

Jonno: Eh, bro. Gua is just highlighthing just how improbable it is to win the league la this year.

Afif: Bro . . . You obviously miss the whole point of this posting.

Isa: Me hopes you haven't paid fer that flight ticket yet . . .

j or ji: Congrats. Title is yers.

Albertus: 2 wins & three losses is better than five draws. Comprende?

Riddzy: Admire yer optimism.

JonC: Me thinks me gave meself a fooking ulcer with the stoke game.

Life's Like That: Pennant beats Messi to World Player of the Year award 2010???!!??

Moz: Am sorry if this posting offends you given the predicament yer team finds itself in.

Kerp: Everton - no strikers, no Belgian afro King etc. Still we canna manage a win. WTF?

Anba: Looks like its gonna be an almighty scrap between LFC, Arse & the Villa fer two european cup spots.

kevo: Glad ye enjoyed it. Lucas - our player of the season!

senorita: Pain & anguish can be a source of great comedy . . .

Uncle AD mean to put the positive in " ... " my bad ... I was thinking of a conversation with Royster about footie and you haahha ...

Cheers Uncle ... all groggy eyed from a 3am drive back to Seremban and now in the office again **zzZZZzzzz**

anfield devotee said...

akuani: Hmmmm . . . Uncle Royston seems to think it is his EXCLUSIVE perogative to criticuse certain aspects of the team while others who do so are just pessimistic pricks . . .

Nay comment la.

**giggles** ... pessimistic pricks eh? ... no comment also :)))

Kerp (Ph.D) said...

eh, did you know non-leaguers Woking Fc (the club Martin tyler supports) is also known as the Scum?

that makes it 3...

muahahahaa......

Sega Blues said...

Gerard scored while Anichebe was still on the ground ranting and raving for a penalty that the taught he deserved for bouncing of Skertl. Everton switched off for a moment and LFC punished em. That says a lot about the match. Everton didn't give space or time to Liverpool to play their usual game for most part of the match. The turning point was when Rafa subbed both strikers for midfielders to protect a one goal lead. Defence starts from the front men and somehow Rafa forgot that.

anfield devotee said...

segar: TQ very much fer that analysis. Pretty much spot on.

Though am sure you will agree with most commentators that foul on Torres deserved a pen; not anichibe's . . .

mozHASturnedINTOaMartian said...

tuan kerpNapp:
martin tyler, woking fc..reallly?
that IS interesting...hmmm.. has suspected him for a spurs fan... seeing that he always seem to have a "softer" spot for them...sheesh..

appreciaitvely,
moz.

mwahhahahhaahahha...oh i see..then it makes it 3 AS WELL fer me...SCUM..*coughcough*
MARTIN TYLER is a legend in his own right. blink a few times to loosen yer earwax - and yu know its him. eat yer heart out freaking shebby.

Kerp (Ph.D) said...

mozzman,

in a way its a good thing that the legendary Tyler has no particular team in the league he support, because he has been extremely fair in all his commentory.

anyway macha, i think that would be the last i took a dig at you fellas la. when i anticipate a wrath, or at least being shot back, it didnt come. finally the guilt has sunk in...hehehe...

but then again, maybe not!

anfield devotee said...

Anba: Please be me guest, we'll be right behind you . . . or NOT!

Moz: Anyone notice how a certain Juande Ramos has turned the ship at the Bernabeu? Martin Jol is having a relatively good season at Hamburg. Hmmmm . . .
ps: Up to you guys now to deny the scu, a quad.

Kerp: None of the other commentators even come close to Tyler's fantastic delivery. Absolutely no one. It'll be a sad day when he retires. His been the voice of English footie as far back as me can remeber.
ps: older fans might remember Brian Moore of Big League Soccer fame.

mozHASturnedINTOaMartian said...

chief, yu took the spittle from my mouth and smothered it right smack bang in the centre of the LANE (and some over at the emirates too...hee hee...).

fact: 2 highly skilled managers with professional attributes that most clubs would die for were told to leave, and both with hefty achievements in tow, both with spurs and before spurs. 2 seasons with a 5th spot and 1 season with a league cup from what seemed to be a remotely lost season.

fact 2: i was grossly upset at the both points of sacking, more so during jol; one of those managers you would trust undettered. i placed the blame squarely on the "sporting" director at them time, for all his rabid purchases. me suspsected fishy "i'll-get-my-cut" dealings when buying dubious players. (note: bbtov was not his reco).

fact 3: however, at this point in time, after ruminating over the many plays i've come to one conclusion - the dudes are simply not fit la bro. i mean not as fit as a pro footie player ought to be. this improved somewhat during the ramos period (era?) ..but still...some of the fellas there just cant plain run, save maybe for lennon.

ok thanks. but point taken. if jol, ramos have flourished before and continue/persist to flourish elsewhere - why not at the lane? herein lies the prob. jol is doing awesome stuff at hamburg sv. have been following him and secretly in a out of the way sorta way hoping for him to come back.

having said that, i have faith in 'arry though. for all his experience - you have to give him face.

cheers mate. ciao.

p.s. ooooo yeah...brian moore...still remember the freeze frame picture of the starting few minutes when the show starts? :)

Kerp (Ph.D) said...

i'm not that old but am quite aware of who mr Moore was- the same guy who did the commentary on '89 Liv-Ars title decider.

'Thomas...THOMAS!!'

bala - great post.... as sarcastic as it was intended... it did put some humour to the whole fiasco..

must wins? looks like the next 16 matches are must wins!

lets face it... our form has proven that we're second best at home and away all season... hence we should be second best overall!

fingers crossed, we wont play second fiddle much longer and finally land no 19!
