BKT: A Love Supreme

There's nothing quite like a boiling hot claypot of pork rib tea fer dinner during the rainy season to warm them tired bones & to soothe a growling belly.

And just before me heads over to me neighbourhood stall, here are a few things to note:

1) This dish is TRULY MALAYSIAN. Abso-fooking-lutely nay argument. Nay Indonesian or Singaporean or even Honkie can lay claim to it with its birth place in Klang. Like all great dishes, it has very working class roots & was probably devised as a means to cook all the "discarded" porcine parts.

2) A sign of a GREAT BKT eaterie is how many Indians are seated in it! Ever notice how Indians gravitate towards BKT? And let's face it, Indians are very CONSERVATIVE diners. Me has seen olde aunties in their saris, y'know the ones that won't even eat thosai outside their own kitchens, happily digging in. Maybe coz its such a wonderful post-thani supper . . . ?

3) Many "purists" say the claypot is a KL thing & adds fook all to the flavour. That may be true, but the claypot keeps the broth bubbling hot that little bit longer & that, in me humble book, is well worth the effort.

Ok, me is off fer me weekly dose of Love Soup & cordially invite ye to share yer thoughts on this wonderful dish &, of course, yer fave BKT hang outs.

Ahhh....BKT.... Best in Klang la:

1. Under the bridge next to police station. (think it was/is the original.)

2. Jalan Melawis near Kommuter station.

I still remember heading to Old Klang road with you and Mary a long long time ago in a drunken binge (Similar to Slim Shady char siew pao conditions...) that had some good stuff too!!

Bro, mesti sedap gila babi kan? kahkahhh...

Ha ha, good one kerpie . . .

BTW, this dish has been modified using mutton fer non-pork eaters.

Kerp (Ph.D) said...

Yea heard about it during a food fest taken place here recently. There's actually Bak Kut Teh HALAL! Doesnt sound right for majority muslim however.

Kerp: Understand yer squeamishness.

But if ye takes out the pandi, rest of the ingredients are healthy, hearty HERBS & mushrooms.

Maybe should re-brand it something else . . .

Sup Lelaki Kuat should do wonders !!! Given Malaysians & their obsession with "ubat" . . .

ps: Get yer wifey to google the recipe ie cooking time & preparation style. Use mutton. Ye can buy the pre-packed herbs in any grocery store.

Kerp (Ph.D) said...

Didnt mean any disrespect bro, so nay worries. I'm the adventurous type when it comes to culinary experience so i dont mind pigging it in if it is served on the table, for as long the bakbak is replaced with mutton or chicken.

kerp: Ni la 1Malaysia . . .

AD: Where in puchong macha? Near bandar kinrara side, can't seem to find any. Do share as i am quite eager to try.

PS: Must order in tamil or they understand English. hahahahahahaa

Kerpie: Hey macha, long time didn't hear from you. How you been bro?

"A LOVE SUPREME"
could have never fathomed that comparison chief,
but then again..one great classict classic being compared to another intrinsic staple classic of malaysiana at its most
gluttonous.
perfect.
its an undeniable fact that
we live to eat.

BKT is tasty, a good dish to have as rightly pointed out on rainy cold day...or after the odd drink binge. i do enjoy it thoroughly, but haven't gone into overt hunt mode for it...i.e. and by hunting..i mean the like the typically-odd food obssessed hunter who hunts for cooked food..who drives miles...tak kire..gravelstone road..back alleys...a warung with a hut for good food mode..for some reason haven't gone to that extent for bkt. but occassions where i had missed lunch...for some odd reason...the stomach growls bahkutehhhh.blueraghhghghghg. especially in this monsoon seasons.

let yu in on something. yu know where i chanced upon one of the best BKT's i've had...in the most unlikeliest of places...KB..kota bharu, kelantan; awesome, to say the least.

thing is this chief, generally the BKT we get over the east side has darker err...complexion(???) to it. the shade in the soup colour is a darker tinge. more black shall we say? not really black black la. just blacker i suppose. mwhahaha. based on one of my usual rambling conversations with this auntywhorunstheBKTshop i frequent..that its a common acknowledged fact (for the chinese) that east coast ones (i.e. the "blacker" ones) tastes better. she says it's something to do with the herbs and condiments. they add a little bit extra of something.

on a personal viewpoint, i can concur that. it does taste better. but then again, after a few rounds and all buzzed out..and hungry...a pile of wood boiled in water would taste good as well. but yeah, it's got it's own signature.

appreciatively,

oh sheeett...chief, BEFORE I GROW OLD AN FORGET...yu have to try this...yu remember another classic ROTI B-A-B-I? i used to be a regualar this quaint lil shop smack bang in the middle of KL, and when i went back there about 2 months back to meet up some old friends...guess wWHAT ...they still serve it.
AND if you can make it on a sunday before 11am - other lelehlicious delicacies available:

a) roti B-A-B-I - french toast with a mushy b-a-b-i filling (looks like canned tuna). goes well with the booze;
b)sunday roask pork (cooked to near perfection) WITH guess what - apple freakin sauce; and
c) finally, pork chops all served in a simple setting with plastic mamak style plates. (dun bother trying the chicken chop-that one nasib, sometimes nice, sometimes not).

the name of the place? think you may know it already. Yut Kee. corner lot coffee shop in dang wangi area. adjacent to wilayah commpleks. replete with ol' school marble top coffee tables, and for lunch yu have to get in early. or else no place.

it used to be a place i normally pop by in the evenings for a cup of decent coffee. i'm a caffeine addict. the coffee at this place is great. they have home made cakes and rolls as well, baked in-house. on friday evening it gets a tad dodgy but all in the name of the good natured fun. evening coffee sessions..transforms..into late evening thanni sessions. you'd get to see bunch of old uncles (including the shop uncle)hassling the younger crowd going "COME ON SON! BAAGGERR SIT WITH ME AND HAVE A BEER LA YOUNG MAN!"..or the odd "why going home so early, gotta smell your wife's backside is it young man..beladhi baaaaggggerr you?". mwahhahaha

but seriously those we good times bro.

ended up making some good literally old friends, from all sorts of background. some are still around. some have moved on.

ended up learning a lot on the road as well.

one of things i took for granted was givin an ear for something.

in that 2 to 3 hours of weekly badgering, somehow either the buncy of them or one or two them will find the time to plop me down and ask how the fark are you. initially i honestly thought they were lookin' fer a sucker to buy them the beers..mwahhaha..how shallow of me. that was not the case.

they always gave an ear. some of them fell quite ill as well. the party didn't stop, it got transferred into their homes. mwahhahahaa. something i found really important. listening. and for that matter, listen to folks who actually bother to listen to you. or else don't bother. its a waste of time until they realise it. mwahhahahhaa

but dude...whoa..seriously ah..AUNTIE'S IN SARI'S AH - THE HOME FOOD IS DA BEST TYPE OF AUNTIES SOME MORE...
cultureshock siot gua.
maybe like yu said..auntie's all after heavy session of thanni kot...

"a love supreme" it is. you're makin me hungry..plus
making me want to dig up
that track again.
coltrane rules.

appreciatively,

AD finally having a peek at your blog after months of not visiting .... and what do I see a piece about BKT - sigh!!! I WANT SOME NOW!

Next trip need to pack up on the herbs and then hunt down the elusive oink in this here sandpit and pay an arm and a leg and maybe a spleen and liver too for a humble bag of ribs with some flesh and BKT away at home in my little kitchen.

Bet the neighbours are going to give me funny looks ... especially since I binge bought ikan bilis by the kilos to keep me happy here.

All that YINDIAN cooking smell that constantly assails my senses is so not happening!!! ... time for me to declare war *maniacal laugh* ... the only problem to the super kill the neighbours solution is ... I myself am averse to belacan otherwise sure fire way to kill 12flrs or Yindians haahhaahahahahha

But having said that, my brother bless the sweetheart took me BKTing the moment I landed in Dec ... albeit in a little old spot in Seremban at the stroke of midnight ...

NOTHING like Malaysia for a foodie like me ... esp oinkster lover that I am :)

HAPPY NEW YEAR chaps and ladies ... anyone heading to the desert????
