Are ye morbid? (Celtic Frost: Morbid Tales)

The Mozzer paid me humble abode a visit last week & ,of course, we got blasted on metal & rum. One of the records that impressed him was the debut EP from Thy Mighty Frost. Am surprised that so many metal fans are ignorant of these Swiss avant garde outfit's work given their stature.

Suffice to say, they are fooking influential in extreme metal circles. Just look at the bands who have covered their tunes - Obituary, Enslaved, Sepultura - should give ye an idea of their standing & importance. And like Napalm Death who came after them, Thy Mighty Frost is hugely responsible fer shaping the landscape of extreme metal as we knows it.

This EP was Celtic Frost's debut after Tom G Warrior & Martin Eric Ain folded Hellhammer. Its raw, primal & full of that underground buzz. Me first heard this when a senior at me college lent me a tape copy. Me almost shit me pants. Me was just getting to know me metal ropes via Maiden & the fledgling Bay Area Thrash scene & this just sounded like nothing else out there. Dark, scary & almost unbearbly heavy, making me tender (then) virgin ears bleed . . .

Anyone who likes their metal HEAVY, me seriously recommends ye check this out. Its legendary fer a reason. Plus any band that can count HR Giger as a fan must certainly warrant a sliver of yer precious time.

And fer those of ye who can understand German, here's a pretty neat documentary on the band! Have a great weekend!!!

J or Ji: Eh? Am a tad surprised.

Hmmmmm . . .

cold lake

j or ji: No wonder la bro!!!

Cold Lake was steaming pile of fooking dung!!! Even Tom G Warrior has publicly apologised fer this BLACK STAIN on the CF discography.

Please, me urges ye to download this NOW & ye shall see why they are held in such high regard.

Am sure ye have heard Sepultura's Procreation Of The Wicked & Obituary's Circle of the Tyrants. Those tunes alone shopuld have told ye that Cold Lake was an anomaly.

Do check these out:
1) Emperor's Return
2) To Mega Therion
3) Into the Pandemonium
4) monotheist (this last LP is available as download on this humble site).

Thy Mighty Frost RULES!!!

Yer not the first one to be put off by CF due to the unfortunate Cold Lake.

AD: I checked out Into the Pandemonium once.

Its brutal and heavy. Did i also mention very dark? Yeah, while listening to it, one word kept repeating itself... EVIL.

And the verdict.....(drum roll please)...........

sorry to disappoint you, but CF not really me cup of tea. Me doesn't mind to them, but wouldn't be one of my fav's lah.

PS: Didn't you feature CF once before on your blog some time back?

achilles: Yes, featured Monotheist, CF's last album (link above).

Hey, if ye checked out the LP & didn't dig it its cool. Janji try.

There's a reason why they don't cover CF tunes on American Idol . . .

But maybe ye may wanna give this their debut EP a try. Its free. Who knows, yer ears threshold fer pain may have increased over the years . . .

Do let us know wot ye thinks of this EP.

AD: I'm not sure what it is but u are spot on in recognizing that many of extreme metal heads here (me included) draw a blank page when it comes to CF. Seems like we missed a generational gap or something but that don't sound right either. They are fookin awesome tho - thats not debatable.

as quoted

"ad, ad...take a bowwwwwww"

first question that hit me on this EP was - wtffffarrrrk. where's that vintage death metal sound? or rather where is that death signatures which ma narrowminded mind has fixated upon all these years. no,no...
the growls, the blastbeats,
gilerbabi solos in differing scales played at once...and
buzzsaw guitars is
all there.
but in
a
unique way.

as i had admitted earlier. had been completely ignorant. heard the name. knew who they were and the origination... but as far as parkin ma arse down to hear a recording. never. maybe, just maybe it had something to do with the purported imagery, make up, darkeyeshadows, spikes and all. now, now, dun get me wrong...i kinda dig the look. in fact find it to a certain extent...able to "catalyze" a certain level of lewd lasvicious goth-erotiqism...er..yeah. come on, i dig manowar's imagery. why not this. but did not bother with it proper.

until the mon plugged in this shit.
whoaaaa...
yu are caught in between that transitional period. when HC punk was evolving into thrash..and soon to follow grind / death.

very-very-very "dirty", chunkily crusty. call it what we may crust-core, d-beat..ka apa...but what's important..it sounds like pure all
out punked up fun. this is good enough to pogo as if you're listening to a good ol'
misfits track. maybe of course minus the obligatory
"oooooo...oooooaahhhh..whoaaaaaaahhhhh" of Tuan Danzig's super poppy sugarrysweet tunes. but yu catch the general drift.

the chords stick in the head after 1 listen.
the "dirt" that i lurve so much
is there.
and the growl..is ever the more
creepy as fark.

what more could yu want?

who says a death band
can be punk? cuunnn.

cheers mate.

the mind broadens.

appreciatively,
moz.

can't be punk a i meant.

mozHASturnedINTOaMartian said...

anba: hellhammer yu say...hmmm...ada crust ka?

anfield devotee said...

mozzer: Glad ye liked it.

BTW, Hellhammer was CF's previous incantation. Even more basic & raw.

In their own words, they didn't even know how to play their instruments properly yet!!!
