Music fer growing facial hair . . .

The bell bottoms . . . the tassels . . . the stacked boots . . . and the facial hair! Fooking hell, the early 7os was definitely a period of piss poor fashion but there ain't no denying the sheer power of the tunes. In particular the stuff these four gentlemen from Birmingham churned out.

Yes, its another blast from the past (sorry, feeling a bit nostalgic lately) - here's Sabbath at their fooking peak doing Children Of The Grave. Despite the fact that Led Zep & Deep Purple were me introduction to classic rock, me has always thought Black Sabbath were the ultimate in heavy fooking metal. They basically laid the blueprint with some seriously awesome LPs.

Those fat, meaty hooks . . . Ozzy's tortured wail . . . add in a rhythm section which played fooking riffs! Pure heavy metal magic!

Hope this helps you get thru the fooking week.

ps: Sorry, nothing much to say today & have ton of work on me table.

pps: You are cordially invited to post yer fave Sab tunes ever.

LLT: Sorry la dude. Me knows. Nothing much going on except work & metal on the headphones hence the music postings. Have avoided the papers since the tragedy in moscow. So not up to date on current events. Apologies.

Will try to post something else next round.

ps: However, it still beats that lazy wanker who runs The Moments In Time blog. Fook me, talk about seriously non-productive or what!!!

kerp: Am shocked. How can someone who so into aggressive music NOT be into the Sabs? Am sure you dig Sepultura's version of Symptom of the Universe. This band is the ground zero fer all heavy music.
Might I humbly suggest you splurge yer next pay cheque on a Sabs box set or at least a best of compilation. Most of me stuff is on vinyl but me will burn you 'Paranoid' & 'Master of Reality' when we meet up ok. Pls remind me.

Bernard: Ha ha! Yeah, that's the entire Best Of album right there.

tinesh: Hope the movie will introduce a whole new generation of fans to this greatest of bands.

AD: Cool fooking stuff man. I must brag here that i was priviledged enough to see Ozzy with the original line up of Sabbath... LIVE during OZFest. Fooking awesome.

Favourite Sabbath song (with Ozzy)would have to be Iron Man... simple but extremely catchy riff. But all time overall Fav sabbath song would be "Heaven and Hell"... which i must brag again i did see them live as well. hehehehee. Sorry-lah... i really love DIO, so will be a tad bit more biased.

BTW, how was the "sick of it all" gig? Hope it was good. Did you know Hitz fm was actually playing their song on the radio? I got a shock as well.

premo: seriously thanx fer that link dude! Been busy downloading albums the last couple of days.

You should check out the Finntroll album. Excellent combination of death metal & Viking warrior tunes. (sounds like the perfect introduction to death metal to Mt Achilles the lioncloth wearer!!!).

AD: Why cancelled? That sucks.

Anba said...

Pantera's version of
Hole in the sky also is good...
Balaji...funny that you should mention Nativity album...
coz' it was one of the reason i first bought Sabbath...
Cathedral's Solitude is my Fav...
I remember first time listening to Sabbath...honestly...it wasn't that great to me...thought it was slow and not that heavy...after all my main introduction to metal was thru Slayer and Metallica..
Only later and slowly did realized the magick of Sabbath the riffs...the musicianship...LYRICS etc...
I remember first time jamming to Iron Man...
man after nearly 40 yrs..the rush that you get it's hard to capture it thru werds..gotta feel it urself...
Between Led..Deep...Uriah..blue oyster..Ac/dc...
Sabbath Rules...

I think the only other band that has influenced metal n punk this much is Motorhead...but that's another story...

Kerp (Ph.D) said...

Bala,

Hey what do you expect? I only bought cassettes that friends recommended back then and for some reason, BS was never mentioned. As I grew older I thought it was a little too late to check out on them. Now, since I’m always broke, I only get stuff that I like the most. Sorry chief, cant afford to part 200-300 bucks for any box-sets or I’ll be totally broke by middle of the month.

senorita.. said...

Sick of It All was cancelled? seriously? what happened?

Tinesh said...

Duuuude!!! The movie should have had "Iron Man" as their theme song la..But gotta give it to the team la, they put AC/DC's Back in Black as the intro to the whole movie..

Doubt anyone's gonna learn about BS thru the movie :S

SOIA gig was cancelled apparently because the organisers were denied a permit last minute. But me thinks there's more to that - after all swedish gothen-metal band Soilwork played on the same day. How come they didnt get canned?

For all you know all this pakcik pakcik bermisai that are the authorities in question probly thought the band's name (Sick Of it All - eh apa ni? Ni jahat namanya!) was askin for trouble. Or maybe the Napalm Death gig got the organisers into some hot water with the venue/authorities there after. Or maybe it was just an elaborate con job. I mean its happened before ya know...

As for Black Sabbath, I can safely say most of us were introduced to it 'backwards' with mixed responses. Of course our first touchpoints with metal began with some thing more current during our then -youthful days (be it Metallica, Soundgarden, Gn'R etc...), before discovering the older bands and founding fathers later via research, tape trading i.e. tracing back the roots.

I remember listening to BS's Masters of Reality when I was 9 or 10, courtesy of my heavy metal uncle who would bring back amazing classic metal and rock albums on vinyl such as Thin Lizzy, Deep Purple etc from his trips overseas. It sent a shiver up my spine cos its sounded dark, slow and EVIL. Thats what got me turned on to it!

But after listening to it many years later, during my speedmetaldeaththrash whatever era, I thought it was OK just cos it couldn't satisfy my lust for speed and brutality that the younger bands delivered. After some repeated listens tho the ol' charm grew on and hit me like the 4th round on a bong! Hehe! Sabbath rules yo! Now I geddit - breaking news!!! Duh :P

Anyways check out Prong's masterpiece album Cleansing, which I think is a forgotten gem that got overshadowed by the likes of Helmet and Therapy?.

tinesh: But me thought they were using the Sabs tune in the promo ads.

Kerp: Not to worry, will burn you paranoid & master of reality. Its their two best albums.

anba: Whichever way you discover em, don't matter, so long as you found em. Another Sab-like band that was a bit of a secret was Trouble. See if you can find em. Their fourth album also called Trouble is utterly brilliant!

senorita / achilles: really fooked up. Should have bought tickets fer Soilwork. bastardo la.
