Thy Mighty Frost - R.I.P

"It was not my departure from Celtic Frost which caused the group's inexorable demise. It was the group's inexorable demise which caused my departure." - Tom G Warrior 17 April 2008

Black metal, thrash metal, death metal, avante garde metal . . .. shit, even glam & fooking hair metal, thy Mighty Frost have been there & done it. Its the second time this hugely influential band has split & much to the disappointment of its many fans given that the reformation effort Monotheist was a fooking return to form. Equal parts doom, thrash & eurocentric avant garde metal, it promised more great things from a band going back to its roots & reinventing itself.
Listen to their early stuff (ie from Morbid Tales to Into The Pandemonium) & you will hear just why Celtic Frost is held in such high regard. Me remembers soiling me pants when me first heard a pirated tape containing the first two EPs during me college days. At a time when Metallica, Slayer & Maiden were considered cutting edge, Thy Mighty Frost were quite simply something else.
Fer the uninitiated, do check out the vid below fer a sample or better yet purchase or download To Mega Therion (featuring artwork from no1 fan HR Giger himself!) & debut EP Morbid Tales. Serious metalheadz will NOT be disappointed (but please avoid shitty glam rock album, Cold Lake, which Warrior himself describes as an "abomination") !!!
Alas, there shall be no more music under the moniker of Celtic Frost. So thank you fer the brilliant albums & the numerous occasions of whiplash listening to them had caused.
ps: First vid is the Frost circa 1985 & the second is from the latest album. Enjoy!

aiyahh...cant relate a thing. but i was closely acquainted to a local black metal band which was quite big back then in our local metal scene. supported the band (Nebiras) during their earlier years. even tagged along to a graveyard in SS1 at 2am for their album's photoshoot. i thought it was rather cool but looking back, they were like a freakshow and i was like their roadie. total freaks, man.

tinesh: Not to worry, will burn you a copy of the collection (Parched With Thirst) & Monotheist when we actually arrange that makan & thani session. Pls remind me.

kerp: Forget the imagery, was the music good? That's what me wants to know. As fer the local scene, Langsuir & Sil Khannaz are probably the two best metal bands around.

Hey AD,

When u starting a best/worst boy band diskusi???Haha......

Kerp (Ph.D) said...

nahhh...the music sucks. they were so fake but for some reason they've got more than 3 albums under them and one of it was produced by CD of Sil-Khannaz fame. the good thing was, i was given a lot of free casettes of local metal bands which includes ofcos, langsuir, silent death, braindead and stuff.

*eh, when are we going to have another round of best/worst five?

whoaaaa..tuan balakov..
dunno what to say mon; cat god da tongue?/swallowed ma-liver?/saliva-ed my posterior? ..no..no..no..
more like..swallowed
me uncs' sireh juice..
*ptuihptuinptuih*

i will however unabadshedly admit this, lotsa a stuff that i discovered were basically were on a retro-active basis; usually by virture of word-of-mouth from good mates who wished to set the record straight..on the originality of the sound and..of course whether
it damn well deserves a
bloody good listening to?
now, what happened was this, during this period of self-experimentation (with the music la) which included amongst others "DUBBING" pirated tapes, zines; tape-exchanges under the table with "che'wan" i.e. the unofficial el-metal supremo of the school at that time...which included an unlikely invite to join one of his "panggil-jin" sessions...(no, i didn't go)...but thanks i discovered..the "joy" of what was to become slayer..and those..
weird,..angular (???)
solos..

anwayyyy...allow me not to digress any further...i discovered helluva lot of stuff from the back one, namely led zep..and i realised...how much the much polarized view on how the seattle sound was truly..a unique.."seattle thing".. i even doubted myself and asked premo about it once over a chat..to get some form of re-affirmation..about how familiar ledzeps were to..me very reminiscent of what a person who have heard had he fast forwarded 25-30 years or so..and landed plump in seattle. premo naturally put things into perspective and cemented the fact.."of course la dude..then what you thinkk" :)

to be totally honest, i think i've only heard like 2-tracks of frost ever. even back then "che-wan" was already hollering slavish devotion to them; i was still nursing my earaaches from
entom-BED, sep & the lilting pleasure that was the knife. shonen knife that is.(btw..just to maybe..nauseate the discerning ear a wee bit...and a tad sore..i also like tomjones/neil diamond and that all time pub classic...preferably sung in broken yinggerish..
"rhinestttttoonneeeeeeeee cowwboyyyyy".

uh.yeah. so what i was trying to say was this.i just realised something about the frost..
they are like the bapak segala deicide, entombed & but probably i won't go as far as to say they are a bapak to death (as in mr.chuck's death)

okay dude. thanks for the vids. refreshing change dont ya think from the simple charlottes to the good plans...and the-cure wannabees.

p.s. tuan kerpovvvv...fuhyooohhhhhhhhhhhh..
so tell me...were there any groupies as part of the nebiras entourage, replete with chicken blood & ceiling mirrors?
tell me tell tell me:)))

me not a big fan of celtic frost...just listen a few songs from em...from my frens intheran..
but me love Giger!

Kerp (Ph.D) said...

boss, now you're talking. their only album (i think!) Before The Sunrise was one of the best local death metal albums back then.

and being a kid to be seen with Pink and Ollie was like the coolest thing in the world.

mozzz,

hahaha, no man, no blood drinking nor any goats were sacrificed. but they were so fond at painting their faces ala Kiss. they never wanted to admit that. to them they're the Darkthrone/Venom of malaysia.

anba: First album - r u refering to 'Morbid Tales'? Pls get second EP 'Emperor's Return' & 'To Mega Therion'. YOu'd be pretty much set by then, me thinks.
The last LP 'Monotheist' is also worthy of yer attention. Me bloody paid RM75 fer it!!! Bastards @ Pertama!!!

Moz: Most definitely a refreshing change. But sad as the Frost are no more . . .

Kerp: You still in touch with Ollie?

j or ji: BTW, Tom G Warrior works in the HR Giger museum. Pls visit his Delineation blog (link on me blog roll).

frost, like i said is a contradiction. coming out of switzerland. you know, high standard of living, affluence, neutrality, luxury watches, etc. what have they got to be pissed off about? ;-)
jokes aside. awesome stuff. but better to kill it off than come out with an album such as meathook seed's second effort.

anfield devotee said...

nickm: Aggressive music can come from the unlikeliest of places.

As fer the crap albums, they already did so with the truly awful Cold Lake LP. But the last effort Monotheist was a smashing return to form. Hence the sadness that they have ddisbanded again.

Am ashamed to say have never listened to Frost before but thx for the links Bals. As that say, nothing lasts forever - be it the good or the bad. But in the immortal words of a Sex Pistol (I think) "...it came and went, at least it made a dent!"
