From Black Metal to Crustcore! (Darkthrone: Fuck Off & Die)

That's right, from purveyors of the blackest metal to crustcore! Although these Norwegians began life as a death metal act (see Soulside Journey), Darkthrone quickly jumped onto the burgeoning black metal scene and went on to release such lo-fi classics such as Transylvanian Hunger, Under A Funeral Moon & Panzerfaust.

But not content with making the fooking unholiest of lo-fi rackets whilst wearing tons of bad corpse paint, Darkthrone released this last year. Counfounding fans & critics alike, their new sound is more crustcore than black metal. Fuck Off & Die can best be described as Hellhammer duetting with Motorhead in a garage! Utterly in keeping with the lo-fi & unproduced feel of their records, Darkthrone is quite possibly the epitome of what underground metal should sound like - raw, uncompromising & fooking brutal!

Sorry bro for the late post...
me was very busy yesterday... just found the time to post me point of view...
been listening to it...for 4-5 times now...
i kind of dismissed black metal when first emerged bck in 92-93...thought the music was lacking something that bands like carcass, entombed, morbid and deicide...
it was the sound...the guitar to me at that time sounded very nipis and not heavy... vocals was more of screeching not growl...and the drums were fast but wheres the rolling ala dave lombardo i asked...
now 16 years later...
i have non of the issues...i guess time has a weird way of changing things...
now i have developed a kind of liking to this kind of production...
these norwagians have their own sense of cold humour hard not to notice...
especially when nocturno culto/fenriz is screaming Canadian metal...
cummon wei Kanada ?

Ridzzy: Yup, me & wifey are both ST fans as well. You ever heard of Mike Muir's side project - Infectious Grooves? Fooking great shit. Me has ST's debut on LP, so canna download, so me hopes that link Bernard left you is still active.

Kerp: So did you also use to paint yerself in corpse paint? Any pix?

premo: How Can I Laugh Tomorrow . . . When I can't even smile today?

Anba: Yo, me sentiments exactly. All those years ago, me was too engrossed in the death & thrash scene. And like you said, the lo-fi black metal productions were not what me ears wanted to hear at the time.
But me has now seen the light (darkness?)! Brutal shit la this. Abd btw, mucho thanx fer the dvds you brought the other day.
Will try to burn you some shit next time we meet up.

fuhhhh...hubba hubbaa..darkthrone siottt. one of those bands that back in schooldays would force a multitude of second glances, particularly if yu've got throne t-shirt on, dark throne artwork on yu bang..heck even a mess-ily sewn on patch would pimply face 16 years old noise heads go "fuhh..really ah..yu layan dark throne ah....and all that setan stuff ah". mwahhahaaa.

chief, again, thanks for keepin' the links puss-ing mon. but similarly, i never got pass "blaze in the northern sky". not to say tak minat to go on to 2nd base, dun get me wrong. it was a classic. tight with bolt and screw, welded for good measure. but not quite up there with them sveeedish blokes entom-BED, plug on a tomby track and whaddaye get? buzzsaw guitars revving, shatteredglass-for-tonsils growls and an almost punky supaglued riffing - lunak bro, lunak..mwhahah. my point, 3 to 4 mins in yu can tell its the entom-BED. maybe i'm just plain dumb, but the tunes didnt cash the register in ma head. kira tak lekat la.

that "crustcore" part yu mentioned is even more interesting..like its gone full circle. what do i mean? not too sure about the throne, but correct me if i'm wrong, previous mid-80's hardcore/anarcho punk bands (esp brits), progressively started playing harder, heavier resulting in a near-thrash sound e.g. exploited, crass, conflict, GBH, ND plus some other bands wa tak ingat. most thrash drumming, if yu strip out the guitars still sound like hardcore punk...and then it got heavier and heavier leading to the awe-inspiring g/core, death, black and other extreme forms. and now, its like coming down the ladder back kot? dunno la just whimsical rhetoric.

having said that, will check it out. the dirt caught me, as yu know, love any shit with some dirt in the recordings (provided can still make out the song, and they don't rip me off with the farkin price tag la mwahah). but thats the thing, like hearing shit like that e.g. that light iuk-iuk metal scraping sound when there is a chord change on the strings, scraping moogs on old ska tracks, deep bass thuds because the mike is a tad bit far from the drums and put all this on vinyl, voila, pure dirty pornless heaven.

i'm a dirty fella who loves dirty things :)) (at least i am not or intend to be a barbaric norseman at some point in my life..mwahhahahha PREMO ruless).

appreciatively,
moz.
p.s. would as usual like to apologize for my innocuous (not to sure about that) ramblings, but i think if i do, i would get a boot on me face anyways :)

riddzy: fuhyoohhhhh ST, bro, gilerr babi cunnnn..especially that crossover part, before they went full out thrash. another bunch of fellas, turn on and can know its them (excluding the thrash era). there was a point in time i started experimenting tying that chicano-bandana thing..er i think mr.muir used to wear around his head, y'know the one gives eyes slit-eyed vision...er tak jadik pulak ler bro, kept bumping into cupboards and stuff mwahahhaha..

fav song: the one that goes
"i sawww your mommmyyy"

keep on steamin.
