Highway to Hell . . . (Slayer: South Of Heaven)

Not much to say today. Same neverending flow of shite in local politics. Footie season came to an end. So me'll just share the download link to Slayer's follow-up to Reign In Blood with yer. So how does one follow-up to thrash metal's fastest, most brutal & unrelenting album of all time?

By slowing shit down! Yes, instead of trying to beat the speed trap, Slayer decide to introduce a more layered approach to their tunes. And the results are astounding.

Me knows many longhairs will scream 'sacrilegious' fer me even suggesting this, but me actually thinks this is an even better album than its predecessor. Don't agree? Download this album & give it a really good fooking listen. Then tell me what ye thinks.

Thrash on!

Can't get much better than this - FREE!!!

In fact, me thinks Seasons In The Abyss was the last truly great Slayer LP. After that, it all got a bit too heavy-fer-the-sake of it me thinks.

bluearrhhgghghhghhghghgh
er..no hang on..
slayer is more of a
argghhhhhhh..rather than an all out blastbeat based..bleuargghghhghhhhhhh
a la the mighty ND..

but...

ahhhh....SLAYERRRR...where do we start...
just too many positives to espouse about i guess...other than the alleged "sombongness" of one senor King (which i came to know only later on), yu'd probably not find not much negatives to slag upon.

even if you're not fan, and not into noisy-noisy things..or as an er..esteemed aunty of a colleague of mind refers to it....kitchen utensils music..see according to her rather warped ears..it sounds like a bunch of fellas bangin' on pots and pans when they've have got their daily filling...
and the nerve she had
to call me
warped.
mwahhahhahhaha

but...what i'm trying to say is this, although we may not be fan..but to hang on around for nearly a quarter of decade, doin the shite they like, be good at it..and tour till they become grandads, and have reunion tours post grandadism, now that's what i would rate in my books and living out yer dreams - just the mere fact of not dreadin' getting up in the morning..springin out to do something yu like...albeit hungover and a "tad" stoned at times...and best of all make some er..."pocket" money out of it..mwahhahahhahahha
now thats something. for dudes who play on "pots & pans" - not bad, not farkin bad at all.

to be very very honest dude, never quite caught on the thrash bug, save for the few bands that had their own signatures over it. slayers was indeed one of them, but i kinda dug those thrash stuff that straddled the hc punk boundary - know what i mean? sorta still had that punky touch to it especially in the phrasing. take a band like sodom, good stuff, but i kinda like the stuff that was played along similar lines as that track..er..iron fist (?) i think..their later stuff not so much, just a one spin compared to the many spins i would play say on reign in blood. which suffice to say, you'd have probably figured out by now, i must be a sad sad cunt to miss out on stuff like bolt thrower...or even machine head. hehehheheh (the exception maybe being a lighter shade of the melvinos la kot. different sludgeparks, but catch ma drift).

but still, siapale aku nak kutuk sodom la kan.mwahhaha. reign in blood was just that bordering that HCpunk edges. as any slayer fan
would not be shy to admit
the drumming pure lombardian extacy - a benchmark for comparison of standards.

on a personality basis, must admit have a "thing" for araya..mwahhahah...like a hero kinda thing. he's not so much of a max cavalera, but still has got his charisma of sorts.

er. but blueprint of death metal? on the money. wonder whether bands like carcass would have come up with their textured stuff if there had been no slayer.

roger roger out

appreciatively,
moz.

one more salient point: the title of the posting, now that has triggered something entirely of a different drunk and rowdy beer swilling by the roadside dimension in me head all ..mwahhahahhahhaa

yu can say anything about the prime minister,
the president even...
but yu don't say anything about...
BON SCOTT!!!
mwahhahhahahhaha

appreciatively,
moz.

p.s. yes, i'm immittating tuan kerp immitating me :))

hmmmm
just remembered actually slayer boast themself as being for being able to release a landmark album like REign in Blood
but i remember once when i was listening to SOD's Speak English or Die..
me was thinkin
this album preceded Reign in BLood by a year was relesed in 85.
yet if you listen closely the speed is there just like slayer

charlie benante is a very underated drummer
summore he can write songs...
the best is in the album he has blast beat in the song Milk
and blast beats are essential in Death metal drumming
something that lombardo never tries in Reign in Blood...
the guitar in SOD is also heavy and considering the fact that the whole album is also under 29 minutes just like Reign in blood and it was released a year earlier...
Scott ian is a fantastic rhythm guitarist..and he's too underated too
i still think it's an album worth checking out and to be compared with Slayer's REign in Blood

as fer South of heaven i do like slayer's slower numbers like South of heaven,Mandatory suicide ...
both i can stop comparing with metallica's slower songs like Fer whom the Bell...TheThing and harvestro of Sorrow...
one thing about slayer for slow songs like
South...Mandatory...Dead skin Mask..Gemini..all the slow song have like a pattern or formula where they always end in Double bass drum beats...hmmmm
but compared to Metallica's For whom or Harvester i prefer metallica's slower tempo songs

anba: didn't get SOD LP coz of racist content.

Anba said...

Balji...that the the problem it's a common misconception that it's racist bro...
hmmm i guess that's a another similiarity with slayer's Reign in blood..
here's a review
for both albums..

Stormtroopers of Death, more commonly known as S.O.D., formed in New York in 1985. They are commonly credited as being among the first bands to fuse hardcore punk with thrash metal into a style sometimes called "crossover thrash". They have also been a subject of controversy due to their politically-incorrect lyrics, in particular a track named "Speak English or Die". The British band Concrete Sox responded to the aforementioned song with a parody entitled "Speak Siberian or Die." Another British band, Lawnmower Deth, wrote a song about Billy Milano entitled "F.A.T. (Fascist and Tubby)". Extreme Noise Terror also wrote a song called "If Your Only in It for the Music (S.O.D. Off)" which threatened Billy Milano. Not all found them offensive, however; in 2000, the Japanese band Yellow Machinegun recorded their own version of "Speak English or Die" on a tribute album titled "Speak Japanese or Die". Finally, S.O.D. member Dan Lilker has stated: "The lyrics were never intended to be serious, just to piss people off."

For the album, Slayer decided to abandon the Satanic themes explored on their previous album Hell Awaits, and write about issues that were more on a street level.[36] Reign in Blood's lyrics include meditations on death, religion, insanity, and murderers, while the lead track "Angel of Death" details human experiments conducted at the Auschwitz concentration camp by Josef Mengele; who was dubbed "the Angel of death" by inmates.[37] The song led to accusations of Nazi sympathizing and racism, which have followed the band throughout their career.[3]

Hanneman was inspired to write "Angel of Death" after he read a number of books on Mengele during a Slayer tour. Hanneman has complained people usually misinterpret the lyrics, and clarified, "Nothing I put in the lyrics that says necessarily he was a bad man, because to me — well, isn't that obvious? I shouldn't have to tell you that."[28] The band utilized the controversy to attract publicity, incorporating the Reichsadler into their logo (also the S in the band's name resembles the Sig runes used by the SS), and writing a song titled "SS-3," which mentions Reinhard Heydrich, the second in command in the Schutzstaffel.[38]

anba: Bro. No misunderstanding here. Listened to me friend's copy, read the lyrics & found what he had to say about Indians (ie us) & the holy ash we put on our foreheads offensive.

But am not one to go on about it & bray fer it to be banned & all. Just didn't buy a copy. Though me might go download a copy now.

Am well aware of Slayer's arguments in their defence. However, many Jewish fans have voiced their concern over their constant use of nazi propaganda films in their concerts as background footage.

While me understands the band's point of view, you must respect the fact that certain segments of society will be offended when images of human suffering are used as props at a rock show.

Right?
