True or False?

Me fellow Malaysians,

Got this in me inbox recently from a colleague. Was wondering if anyone can confirm the veracity of the following tips. Nanda? Your area of knowledge rite? Pls verify.

If accurate, can't see no harm in following what is essentially cost- and environment-saving measures. Me leaves it to yer better judgement . . .

Tips on Filling your Vehicles...
I don't know what you guys are paying for petrol... but here in Durban, we are also paying higher, up to 47.35 per litre. But my line of work is in petroleum for about 31 years now, so here are some tricks to get more of your money's worth for every litre.
Here at the Marian Hill Pipeline, where I work in Durban, we deliver about 4 million litres in a 24-hour period thru the pipeline.

One day is diesel; the next day is jet fuel, and petrol, LRP and Unleaded. We have 34-storage tanks here with a total capacity of 16,800,000 litres.
ONLY BUY OR FILL UP YOUR CAR OR BIKKIE IN THE EARLY MORNING WHEN THE GROUND TEMPERATURE IS STILL COLD. Remember that all service stations have their storage tanks buried below ground. The colder the ground, the denser the fuel, when it gets warmer petrol expands, so buying in the afternoon or in the evening.... your litre is not exactly a litre.

In the petroleum business, the specific gravity and the temperature of the petrol, diesel and jet fuel, ethanol and other petroleum products play an important role. A 1degree rise in temperature is a big deal for this business. But the service stations do not have temperature compensation at the pumps.

WHEN YOU'RE FILLING UP, DO NOT SQUEEZE THE TRIGGER OF THE NOZZLE TO A FAST MODE. If you look, you will see that the trigger has three (3) stages: low, middle, and high. In slow mode, you should be pumping on low speed, thereby minimizing the vapours that are created, while you are pumping. All hoses at the pump have a vapour return. If you are pumping on the fast rate, some of the liquid that goes to your tank becomes vapour. Those vapours are being sucked up and back into the underground storage tank so you're getting less worth for your money.

ONE OF THE MOST IMPORTANT TIPS IS TO FILL UP WHEN YOUR TANK IS HALF FULL. The reason for this is, the more fuel you have in your tank, the less air occupying its empty space. Petrol evaporates faster than you can imagine. Petroleum storage tanks have an internal floating roof. This roof serves as zero clearance between the petrol and the atmosphere, so it minimizes the evaporation.

Unlike service stations, here where I work, every truck that we load is temperature compensated, so that every litre is actually the exact amount.
ANOTHER REMINDER, IF THERE IS A FUEL TRUCK PUMPING INTO THE STORAGE TANKS, WHEN YOU STOP TO BUY, DO NOT FILL UP - most likely the petrol/diesel is being stirred up as the fuel is being delivered, and you might pick up some of the dirt that normally settles on the bottom.

Hope, this will help you get the maximum value for your money.

sounds plausible. but really, how much petrol would one be saving. i think it's more effective to focus on one's driving style.

btw. check my post on cavalera conspiracy.

hmmmmm got the same email from my office mates. Sounds and looks to be plausible as petrol do vaporised pretty fast.

i think it pretty believeable... and i think one shud practise and not think that it's petty and wont make a difference... it will..

being kotte, me already tried all these techniques... honestly, i didn't see much difference-lah. Maybe for every RM 50 you pump, you can go another 2KM more...that's all

So if your petrol tank is running empty in the middle of the afternoon... just pump-lah...no need to wait till the next morning to pump. you may have to push your car to the station the next morning coz you ran out of fuel. Where possible, we follow these tips lah...but then we also have to be logical.

you know whats the best way to maximize value for money for your petrol? get rid of bodohwi and return our oil prices to normal. seriously

you know what. all those here who believe this works, please do what Mr Patel suggests. I'll do a recap here:
1.ONLY BUY OR FILL UP YOUR CAR OR BIKKIE IN THE EARLY MORNING WHEN THE GROUND TEMPERATURE IS STILL COLD.
2. WHEN YOU'RE FILLING UP, DO NOT SQUEEZE THE TRIGGER OF THE NOZZLE TO A FAST MODE.
3. ONLY FILL UP WHEN YOUR TANK IS HALF FULL.
4. IF THERE IS A FUEL TRUCK PUMPING INTO THE STORAGE TANKS, WHEN YOU STOP TO BUY, DO NOT FILL UP - most likely the petrol/diesel is being stirred up as the fuel is being delivered, and you might pick up some of the dirt that normally settles on the bottom.

Please do all that and report back to FFS and let us know how much fuel you saved.

AD : Got better way to save money! Instead of drinking 4 jugs between us in our thanni sessions, let's just have 3 the next time! That's RM40 saved. Definitely much more than the ways mentioned to pump fuel.

Or maybe drink just 2 jugs??? Nah...that wld be too big a sacrifice!!!

definitely sounds very logical but I shall wait for Mr Nanda to say his piece :D

hey AD!

i have been busy with my studies man! short sem is mad!...

i wish i get to blog more!!!

anyway, i have received such email which talk about fuel saving as well...as nick said...i wonder too how much fuel we can save by that!...

holding at the slowest speed for refill...burn my energy...hahaha...
better let it auto at fastest speed...

...dun talk about fuel la...sakit hati....now pump...mata bengkak, sakit kepala...

this is an untested myth by the mythbusters duo. but i can safely bet with you la bala, in all the test done as far as saving fuel is concerned, none were even plausible, as in the myths are totally totally busted.

while we wait fer Petronas employee nanda to get back to us, maybe we should all do as Nick says - try some of the tips & see what results are achieved.

Other than that, me must say me wholeheartedly agrees with achilles's suggestion ie get rid of that buffoon who calls himself pm.

LLT: maybe we should stop drinking . . . (*cue sound of uncontrolled laughter*)

Balaji:-
... i got a similar kind of email like and then me brother also said the same thing...
Abt a week ago...i tried some of the suggestion ...especially filling up speed playing with the trigger...the only result was me being like a dunggu there trying to fill up a full tank...with super slow speed to the extent the pump attendant was eying with suspicion...
but honestly i doubt it bro...now just simply buat biasaja bro...hantam saja...

anfield devotee said...

Anba: No harm in filling it on the slow nook of the trigger. Just try & see la.

Zaman meleset, semua mesti cuba.

sorry...was away from blogs..work la...o.k. lets see....

1. You get more fuel when you pump at night and early morning....TRUE..and quite a lot more...I drive a bemmmer...i know..

2. Using slow pumping...TRUE..did this by topping up from my Low to half using the different modes...

3. Filling up when you're at half tank to prevent evaporation...DEPENDS....on large capacity cars, not such a good idea. My full tank is close to 100ltrs. I'll be carrying 100kg of load all the time... NOT GOOD... same reason why the formula 1 guys re-fuel twice.

Additional personal recommendation...

4. If you have tiptronic transmission, drive on manual in traffic jams. It really helps as you can keep the revs low.

Just my engineering 2 cents!!
