Race before religion?

One of me colleagues (let's call her Madam O) is a very generous & warm hearted soul. She is moved by everyday plight of people & is always generous with her donations regardless of her own financial constraints.

Just to give you an example, when we were having lunch a few months back, Madam O noticed the couple sitting in the adjacent table had a mentally disabled child. Madam O took the time to go over to say hello to the child & ask the mother about the kid. Madam O then handed the mother some money saying it was fer the child's savings. Although the mother had not asked fer anything (& initially refused to accept), you could see she was surprised & touched by me colleague's sincerity.

This morning, me colleague says she as she was dropping off her own kids at the babysitter, she was approached by an Indian lady & some children. The Indian lady was soliciting fer donations & showed her the portfolio. The centre is in Kajang & cared fer neglected as well as disabled children & is a shelter fer battered wives. Madam O without hesitation handed her whatever she had in her purse & was thanked profusely by the Indian lady & her kids.

As Madam O prepared to hand over her kids to the babysitter, the latter asked who was the Indian lady & what did she want. Upon listening to Madam O's explanation, the babysitter remarked, "apa pulak tanya dengan orang Melayu?" (Why must she ask from a Malay?)(!!!)

Me colleague was at once disheartened, shocked & disgusted. She was speechless. Madam O says she cannot understand why even in situations like this, people must look at race. And doesn't one's religion teach you to be charitable towards the less fortunate.

Going by the example above & half a century of race-based politics, skin pigmentation is the only fooking issue that matters. Thankfully, there are people like Madam O around which means there is still a semblance of hope fer us as a nation . . .

ps: Madam O is herself looking fer donations to purchase an Alfa 156 . . . feel free to contribute via comments box!

WTF? Help should go to EVERYONE that needs it. Sad man..... really sad.

Sadly to say race politics has been made the mainstay of Malasyian politics. This is not to say that race politics is a way of life. We cannot help the fact that the babysitter whom I suspect is an uneducated person not wise in the ways of the world.

I mean look to the US. We are possibly going to see the first African-Caucasian American who is also able to speak in Bahasa Indonesia to be President of the United States of America. So I am guessing it boils down to education of the masses. The more we know, the more we are aware. This is something I see that is lacking in the Malaysian education system. The promotion of the concept of Bangsa Malaysia should be at its earnest in order to eradicate such thinking.

I mean does the babysitter know that Pak Lah has relatives in China who are Muslims? I bet if she know some sort of education I would bet she would be embarrased.

Say No to Racism! Say No to Manchester United and SAY YES TO LIVERPOOL FC!

JonC & Albertus: Unfortunately, many of us look at the world thru race-tinted specs. Tragic really.

But like me said, people like Madam O demonstrate that the seeds of a 'Bangsa malaysia' has been sown.

ps: You guys, pls don't be late fer esok punya thani session!

its sad but like it or not, we have to accept the fact that racism is very much alive in our society. not sure of who to point our fingers to but could be their kampung-mentality. i dont see any point to deal with them really. its just the way they were brought up. and if nothing is being done, the next generation will stuck with the same sick-mentality. memang hancur brother.

* will be there on time, or slightly after 5.

i've never heard of any of my grandparents making racist comments on other races. in fact my maternal grandparents speak good BM, used to live in a kampung. they were farmers whom have many frens of the Malay race. grandparents had very limited formal education.

moving on to my parents, they are luckier in the education department, but lack the knowledge to better judge what's going on around the world. i've heard my parents making racist remarks n how they've biased opinion towards a certain race for receiving better treatments from u-know-who.

i do not blame them for being so as i believe they're like that partly coz they listen too much to what others have to say (i.e frenly opposition members) as well as focusing too much on what others are getting instead of looking at what they have themselves. as for me,i believe there will be rotten apples no matter what race and colour. the important thing is to not stereotype n group these people all together n deem a certain race bad. easier said than done, as always.

ps: sole sponsored by Kerp...??! dammit..! send some ketam to NZ can ar?

here's one word from the sponsor- PUNDEK!

senorita: good point. Education had very little to do it. Me late grandma (from India) was very friendly towards all races even though there was a language barrier.

The point is Racial politicking must stop. Of course, bad apples exist & racism is everywhere, but that don't mean we must take it lying down. a better future fer all is what we should be striving fer regardless of what BN are tryig to do . . .

ps: (off topic) you never did mention whether you actually enjoyed Pulp Fiction besides being grossed out on that scene. How bout you do a review of the fim on yer blog? Would be interesting to read what a younger generation of viewer has to say bout a film that's over a decade old.

Here's a reply to Tuan Kerp from all the sponsored pundeks : THANK YOU VERY MUCH FROM THE DEEP RECESSES OF OUR HEARTS!!!

Racial harmony? Pah! Racial tolerance? Ptooi! How much discrimination can one take? The really really stupid thing is that when faced with questions regarding racial conflict/segregation, them idiots can still claim they are taking measures to quell it. Better yet, they put the onus on us to get along with one another. "Rakyat mesti sabar dan bertolak ansur", you hear shit like that all the time. Bollocks! Remove all discriminatory policies and then we'll talk. The thing is I'm sure we all agree it's not really about race. It's about the elite group of greedy louts stuffing their fat faces. The racial card is only played to garner support from the ignorant.

In any case, Bala I also have another drinking session after that hence the concern. Mine will only start at around 10pm, how to tahan wei?!?!?! I'll do a Lester and have non-alcoholic beer. Got stock or not???

Jon-C said...

WHAT? Non-alcoholic beer? Mark..... u alright kah? Wahaahahaha! My friend from Bombay needs company.

Bala - 5 pm is early and I dun wanna be crawling out on all fours like a crab come 9pm! Will try to be there before 6 cos I have a paintball game earlier. Biren wont be able to make it but Amrit should be there.

As for all these racial issues, it has always been an omnipresent one, regardless of geographical boundaries. Racially biased attitudes are slowly dying out however largely due to education and yes, the internet. The world really is a much smaller place now and has increasingly no place for such draconian state of minds which only encourage regressive policies and irrational fear.

While it would be naive to fantasize of a utopian society free of corruption, greed and discrimination of any kind, its also imperative that we as progressive minded thinking beings work towards achieving something close to that agenda - and the only way to lead that enlightened path of awareness is through the education.

Hence it is also our social and moral duty or obligation to educate the ignorant and mislead. This may not always be the easiest thing to do especially when dealing with folk from lets say our parents generation who are fond of racial stereotypes. Why is it perfectly ok to have a chat while buying yau char koay from ur friendly neighbourhood Chinese stall owner ... but then secretly chastise him for being a conniving Chinky bastard when he accidently gives you the wrong change - and even after he's apologized for it!

Ppl just do/say things like these every day like its second nature. So seeing it happen in politics/sports/entertainment/cosmetics/advertising is just a reflection of what happens in our society. We only need to look ourselves to see the root of the problem.

Unfortunately with some people, even in today's politically correct climate, they'd rather bleach their skin and change their surname than admit and purge their racist tendencies.

becky: Just come at 5pm la. Drink at yer own pace la. Its cool. Plus we'll be eating, so you'll be fresh as prawns fer yer 10pm session.

premo: see above as well. Fer fook's sake, just go easy la & you'll be fine fer yer later appointment la. leceh la all doing a Rajan ie late!

Racist tendencies are so deeply ingrained in our national psyche that its gonna be a long time before we can ourge it. But the process has to start now. And me is not talking bout paying mere lip service!

Mohan: Me is mixed. Me wifey is mixed. Yup, on the way there toward diluting the racial stereotypes . . .

Becky: One more thing, Lester DRINKS these days . . . BIG TIME might I add. Fooking Vodka monster la that dude!

I believe in racial tolerance but I don't remember us stopping our football game for azan, saying "Doa" before everything and basically just making non-muslims feel uncomfortable at gatherings!!
This is what is new now which was not there during our time!! Check out the new generation Indians and Chinese kids too....how many were like us before...listening to Malay rock, Alleycats, etc?
The attitude is...you do your "Melayu" thing and we'll do ours...see...we tolerate...
That the new version of racial tolerance dude!!!

Just the typical mentality created by Mahathir and continued by Badawi lah!

Rahman wanted equality...then comes Mahathir said no no no....got booted out...came back in....booted Rahman out...then starts the racial politics...and yet warned opposition of not making race an issue...wtf...

then badawi came...continued it...with much disgrace...wanna play race based politics also failed terribly!...what a shame...

yesterday only saw him say what ah seng and ahmad...don't want to take ah seng's toilet to give to ahmad...just want ahmad to have more opportunity to shit...then if ahmad have more...doesn't it mean everyone else including ah seng get less?...bodohwi betul!!! kurang ajar!

But anyway, seriously touhced by your colleague...
